The signs of the prophethood of Muhammad (PBUH) are a foundational concept in Islam, and as such, are often tested in IGCSE and O Level Islamiyat. Let’s explore this topic in detail to give you the best chance of achieving A* in your O Level exams and learning more about the early days of Islam.

Signs of Prophethood of Muhammad (PBUH)

There are numerous signs of Prophethood in Islam. Many occurred before Muhammad (PBUH)’s call to Prophethood in Ghar-e-Hira.

During the Prophet’s teenage years, there was a reported incident involving a monk named Bahira. The young Muhammad (PBUH) was travelling with his uncle, Abu Talib, to Syria. They came across Bahira who told Abu Talib of the coming of the Prophet (PBUH) according to authentic Christian gospels and asked him to guard the child carefully. This is among the first signs of prophethood.

Signs of Prophethood in Islam can also be found in the Quran. We know that the Prophet grew up as an orphan and had to face many hardships in his childhood. The Quran was revealed later but verified this part of his life:

Did He not find you (O Muhammad) an orphan and gave you a refuge?” (Ad-Duhaa 93:6)

What is the Seal of Prophethood?

According to Islam, the Prophet Muhammad is the final Prophet sent by Allah to guide humanity. This belief leads to the term “seal of prophethood”, which means that the line of Prophets was sealed after the coming of Muhammad (PBUH) and that there will be no other Prophets after him.

This concept is also strongly indicated in the Quran:

Muhammad is not the father of [any] one of your men, but [he is] the Messenger of Allah and last of the prophets. And ever is Allah, of all things, Knowing.” (Al-Ahzab 33:40).
