There’s a saying, “Do what you love and love what you do.” What is life worth if we do not spend it doing what makes us happy? When you passionately care about your career and the subjects you choose, you do succeed.

After surpassing the hectic 3 years of O Levels, more decisions lie ahead regarding our future, especially which A Level subjects we should choose. Thus arrives the conflict: society vs. self.  Not every career or subject is practical, some require more time and effort than others, therefore, it is important to make this decision with all cards on the table.

Choosing A Level subjects:

Choosing subjects for A Levels, and thinking of university applications is all a strenuous effort yet we must not forget, that this is the time to experiment! To take a variety of subjects to see which field interests us most. However, when choosing between a variety of A Level subjects, it is also important to narrow them down to three essential key points

  • Passion:
Look at what you are most passionate about. Take the A Level subject 'Law' for example. Did you grow up dreaming about becoming a lawyer? If so, then I’d say it is your true passion. However, if the sudden discovery of your passion came around the time you started watching ‘Suits’, then you probably need to dig a little deeper. Hence, it is important to choose to study what you love and are passionate about.

*Tip: Think about the O Level classes and topics that excite you the most and use them as a starting point for your A Level subject selection.

  • Future University Requirements for A Level:
Some universities have assumed knowledge or prerequisites set as requirements, so do your university research beforehand to figure out a pathway to where you want to be. Having an end goal will help you make better decisions and selections.

*Tip: It’s okay for the end goal to change (or in better terms, evolve)!

  • Future Degree:
Many people choose a degree knowing that they would want to do a master’s degree after it, no matter what. Your dream graduate degree might be a perfect combination of your passion and vocation, therefore, problem solved. Now your first-degree option can be somewhat dependent on the prerequisites of your second.

  • Flip A Coin:
Now you may be thinking, “Are you kidding me? I’m not going to let a coin toss decide my A Level future!”… but hold your horses, I have a point. First of all, this should only be used as a last resort. If you’re absolutely torn and you have no idea which A Level course of study to choose, shortlist it down to two options. Then as you commit yourself to stick to the outcome of the toss, no matter what, flick your thumb and propel the coin into the air. Most people will know what they truly want as the coin starts to land. Go with that decision, it’s what your gut wants.

Conclusion

All these points are fundamental for choosing A Level subjects that are most relevant to your future career. Thus, it is important to decide choosing subjects wisely as it highly affects your plans for the future.
